Dreaming of diving with big sharks? The excursion to Bat Islands is perfect for you!

Located in northern Guanacaste, Bat Islands, or Isla Murcielago, is a renowned spot for Advanced Open Water Divers. These islands are protected as a marine reserve, so you’ll be surrounded by a lot of marine life. The big highlight? Bull sharks! From May to September, the conditions are ideal for spotting these impressive sharks. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot the winning combo: bull sharks and manta rays together!

We meet at 6 am at our dive center in Tamarindo. Yes, it’s early, but trust us, it’s worth it for an epic experience! We’ll get you set up with your dive gear, and then we drive to Flamingo Bay. From there, it’s about a 2.5-hour boat ride to the Bat Islands. No need to worry about getting bored, we’ll chat, laugh, and maybe even spot some dolphins or whales along the way.

Once we reach the Bat Islands, it’s time for action! We’ll dive to 30 meters (100 feet) to see the famous bull sharks. Between dives, you will enjoy some snacks and drinks on the boat. After our two dives, we will have lunch before heading back to Tamarindo and should arrive there around 3 pm.

FAQ - Diving at Bat Islands with Bull Sharks

Diving at Bat Islands is a bit more adventurous than your usual dive, so we ask that you’re an Advanced Open Water Diver. Why? Because we dive to depths of up to 30 meters (100 feet) and might face stronger currents. This certification means you’re already familiar with handling these conditions and can enjoy the dive without stress. Plus, getting up close with bull sharks is thrilling, and it’s good to have some experience to make the most of it. If you’re certified and ready for a bit of excitement, you’re all set!

The Bat Islands are ideal for diving from May to September when the weather and sea conditions are generally more favorable. During this period, you’ll find calmer waters and better visibility, making for a more enjoyable dive. Outside these months, strong winds and rough seas can make diving at Bat Islands tricky and less pleasant. Because of these conditions, dive operators typically focus on Bat Islands during the May-to-September window.

But don’t worry if your trip falls outside this period! We also offer diving tours to the Catalina Islands year-round. The Catalina Islands are also one of Costa Rica’s best dive spots!

Bull sharks might seem a bit intimidating, but they’re usually safe to dive with when you stick to standard dive protocols. Our experienced guides are there to make sure everything runs smoothly and safely and maintain a well-regulated environment. By sticking to the safety guidelines and listening to your guide, you’ll be all set for a secure adventure underwater!

First, we’ll drive from Tamarindo to Flamingo, which takes about 30 minutes. From there, we board on our diving boat for a 2.5-hour ride to the Bat Islands. During the trip, you may spot some dolphins or whales. It’s also a great time to chat with your guides and gear up for the dive ahead. The journey is all part of the fun and excitement 😉

From May to September, the Bat Islands offer great diving conditions. Visibility usually spans from 9 to 30 meters/30 to 100 feet, but keep in mind it can shift a bit during your dive. You might encounter thermoclines—those cool layers of water that can surprise you. The water temperature stays comfortably warm during these months, with air temperatures hanging in the high 80s to mid 90s Fahrenheit (around 25-30°C).

Absolutely! We’d be happy to help organize a private tour just for you and your friends/family. It’s a great way to have a more personalized diving experience. Just let us know in advance, and we’ll organize it for you.
