Yes, if you haven’t dived in over 12 months, we highly recommend taking this refresher before joining any dive trips. Scuba diving requires specific skills and muscle memory that can fade over time. A refresher helps you regain confidence, improve your buoyancy control, and review essential safety procedures, reducing the risk of accidents. It also ensures that you feel comfortable with your equipment, breathing techniques, and underwater communication, allowing you to fully enjoy your dives without stress. Plus, many dive centers require a refresher if you haven’t been diving for a year or more to ensure both your safety and that of your dive buddies.
Yes! Whether you’re certified through PADI, NAUI, SDI, RAID, CMAS, or any other recognized diving agency, you can take the SSI Scuba Skills Update. Scuba diving certifications are universally respected across different training organizations, and this refresher course is designed to help all certified divers, regardless of their initial certification provider. The skills and safety procedures covered in the course are standard across agencies, ensuring you can refresh your knowledge, practice essential techniques, and regain confidence underwater, no matter where you were originally trained.
If you haven’t dived in over 12 months, we highly recommend taking the Scuba Skills Update, especially if you have limited experience (for example, if you’ve only completed a few dives after your certification). Refreshing your skills ensures your safety and helps you feel confident underwater.
However, if you’re a highly experienced diver with 100+ dives and strong proficiency in diving techniques, you likely won’t need a refresher unless you personally feel the need to review skills. Ultimately, it’s about your comfort level and readiness to dive safely.
For the SSI Scuba skills update, you’ll have to bring:
- Your scuba diving certification card
- Towel & dry clothes
- Reef-safe sunscreen and a sun hat
- Cash or credit card for payment, tips, or extras

For the Scuba Skills Update course, we conduct the pool training session in a controlled environment to refresh your skills before heading to the ocean. The open water dives take place at the Catalina Islands, a world-famous dive destination known for its rich marine life, volcanic rock formations, and frequent sightings of manta rays, turtles, and reef sharks.
