🎒 What to bring on the fun dive day
WHAT IS A FUN DIVE?
A fun dive is exactly what it sounds like, a dive for the pleasure of diving. No coursework, no exams, just you and the ocean. This tour is designed for certified divers (SSI, PADI, NAUI or equivalent) who want to explore the Catalina Islands properly, with time to breathe, look around, and actually enjoy what’s down there.
We do two dives at two different sites around the Catalinas, so you get to see a variety of underwater marine life. Your bilingual SSI guide stays with the group throughout, pointing out what’s worth looking at and making sure everyone’s comfortable.
Depending on the season and conditions, you might cross paths with white-tip reef sharks, sea turtles, moray eels, schools of tropical fish, octopuses, and during manta ray season (December to May), the occasional manta gliding by. Keep an eye open on the boat ride out too, dolphins and humpback whales are regular visitors along the way.

The Catalina Islands are one of the most well-known dive destinations on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. Located about 30 minutes by boat from Tamarindo, they sit at the confluence of warm and cold currents, which creates a surprisingly rich underwater environment, varied marine life, interesting topography, and conditions that change with the seasons.
As a certified diver, a fun dive at the Catalinas is one of the best ways to explore what Guanacaste has to offer underwater. Be Water Diving has been running these trips for over 10 years, with small groups, experienced bilingual guides, and a straightforward approach, good diving.
If you’re based in Tamarindo or visiting the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica, the Catalina Islands are worth the boat ride.
FAQ
Any recognized open water certification works, SSI, PADI, NAUI or equivalent. Bring your certification card on the day. If you’re not yet certified, we offer a Discover Scuba Diving experience for beginners, or a full SSI Open Water course.
It depends on the season and conditions, but white-tip reef sharks, sea turtles, moray eels, octopuses, and large schools of tropical fish are common year-round. During manta ray season (December to May), sightings are fairly frequent. Dolphins and humpback whales sometimes appear on the boat ride.
Depth varies by site and diver certification level, typically between 15 (50 feet) and 25 meters (82 feet). Your guide adapts the dive profile to the group’s experience and conditions on the day.
Yes, as long as you hold a valid Open Water certification. Our guides keep groups small and adapt the dive to everyone’s comfort level. If you haven’t dived in a while, just let us know when you book.
Diving at the Catalinas is good year-round. The dry season (December to April) tends to offer better visibility and calmer seas. The rainy season (May to November) can bring stronger currents, which often means more pelagic activity. Manta ray sightings are most common from December to May.

BE WATER DIVING
Be Water Diving is an SSI-certified dive center based in Tamarindo, with over 10 years of experience running diving trips to the Catalina Islands and beyond. We know these dive sites well, the currents, the best spots depending on the season, where the sharks and octopus tend to hang out. That local knowledge makes a difference underwater.
We keep our groups small, with a maximum of 4 divers per guide, so the pace works for everyone and nobody gets left behind. Our guides are bilingual (English & Spanish), fully qualified, and always enjoy what they do. No rushed turnaround, no oversized groups, just a proper day of diving.
